UnGrid Project

UnGrid provides hands-on training to teach community groups how to draw power directly from the sun, collect clean drinkable water directly from the sky, and sustainably access other resources we need to survive in a way that directly empowers us while respecting the planet to which we all belong.

In a society driven by fear-mongering and manufactured scarcity, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that nature is abundant and provides more than enough resources for all humans to live well. There are many newer and traditional technologies that can empower communities to directly harness the resources we need to survive and greatly reduce our dependence on greedy corporations.

UnGrid engages community groups in hands-on building projects in order to pass on the know-how of building systems for solar power, rainwater catchment, and other nature-aligned methods of cultivating resources.

"We must dare to invent the future."
- Thomas Sankara -

In our collective struggle for Black liberation and the liberation of all people from oppression, we must manage a healthy balance between calling out and confronting injustices AND strategically building infrastructure within our communities so that we can have autonomy over the resources that we need to survive. The writing is on the wall. Imperialism is running rampant and the richest people in the world are accelerating their inhumane, dystopian vision of a "better world".  It's time for us to UnGrid from empire. We must relearn to hold our own and better position ourselves to fight for collective self-determination.

UnGrid Training Station

UnGrid officially launched in the Fall of 2025 with the completion of our first UnGrid Training Station in Atlanta, GA! Members of Community Movement Builders Atlanta Chapter along with other local volunteers gathered at the Love, Land, and Liberation farm to build a 100 sq. ft. pavilion that houses three sustainable resource systems. The rainwater catchment system can store over 600 gallons and features a natural, gravity-fed filtering system that uses layers of rock, sand, and charcoal to remove toxins from the collected water. The pavilion is powered by solar panels mounted on the roof and connected to a portable solar generator that can be removed and used off-site. There is a vertical garden on the exterior walls that uses a timed irrigation system to minimize the work of tending to the garden.

What does it mean to "Un-Grid"?

“Un-gridding” is the process of collaborating with neighbors to develop community-based systems that empower us to significantly reduce our dependence on greedy corporations and corrupt governments to meet our basic physical survival needs.

In addition to preparing to collectively fend for ourselves during emergencies, we un-grid as a pathway to reclaim our time, energy, security, and power of choice so that we're better positioned to heal, live well, and challenge oppressive systems.
